Arizona Funeral Homes | Memorial Day

Arizona funeral homesMountain View Funeral Home & Cemetery is proud to be among the Arizona funeral homes honoring veterans this Memorial Day 2015. We invite you to join us for a Fly Over and Dove Release event on May 25th at 9:00 am. Local fraternal organizations will perform a military Memorial Day service. Refreshments will be served.

Many other organizations, including Arizona funeral homes across the state, will recognize Memorial Day, as well. Here is some historical background about this revered holiday:

  • Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day.
  • General John Logan, National Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, proclaimed it an official holiday in 1868. He is considered the founder of the holiday.
  • New York was the first state to recognize the holiday.
  • In 1890, it was recognized by every state.
  • It became a legal holiday in 1967 and a federal holiday in 1971.
  • When it became a federal holiday, the date was changed from May 30th to the last Monday of the month.
  • A poem by Moina Michaels inspired the tradition of wearing of a red poppy to honor vets. Red poppies may be seen on the grounds of some Arizona funeral homes during Memorial Day weekend or worn by those who are paying respect.
  • In 1865, over 1000 freed slaves held one of the earliest tributes of our military veterans after the Civil War.
  • In December 2000, Congress passed a law requiring Americans to pause at 3 pm local time on Memorial Day to remember our war heroes.
