Famous Cemetery Locations Around the World

cemeteryBurying a loved one in a cemetery is one of the toughest things we have to do as a society. However, around the world and at home, funerals are not just to mourn our friends and family who have passed away, but an opportunity to celebrate their life. In every corner of the globe, there are famous cemeteries where people have been buried, sometimes even for centuries. These cemeteries embody the idea of “gone, but never forgotten.”

Here are three very well-known cemeteries from around the world:

1. Arlington National Cemetery

Arlington is a cemetery located in Arlington County, Virginia It is just across the Potomac River from Washington D.C.. As one of the most famous military cemeteries in the world, Arlington has over 400,000 graves of fallen, American military veterans dating back to the Civil War. It is also home to the Tomb of the Unknowns, where the remains of our servicemen from World War I, World War II, Korean War and Vietnam who could not be identified are buried in a yule marble tomb that is guarded 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment.

2. Okunoin Cemetery

The Okunoin Cemetery is located in the forest surrounding Mt. Koya in Japan. It is the largest cemetery in the country. The site is surrounded by thousands of oil lanterns and has many unique tombstones and plaques, dedicated to people from all walks of life including astronauts, CEOs, monks and other people. The site is a World Heritage location, as it has graves that are over a thousand years old.

3. Old Jewish Cemetery, Prague

The Old Jewish Cemetery in Prague, Czech Republic, dates back to the early 15th century. What makes this location extra interesting is that it has layers of graves, because Jewish law does not permit the graves of the deceased to be disturbed. Overall, there may be as many as 100,000 burials here.
