Dealing with grief can be a complicated process. Whether you lost a parent, child or a sibling, no one processes a death the same way. Unfortunately, grief doesn’t take a backseat to the planning of a funeral or finding a Gilbert cemetery. Handling funeral arrangements can add to emotions you are experiencing. This is something that our staff at Mountain View Funeral Home understands. We know that losing a love one is difficult. And that is why we are here to help. To that end, here are some facts about grieving that may help you comprehend what you’re feeling and experiencing.
In 1969, a psychiatrist, Elizabeth Kubler-Ross identified five stages that people often go through when they’re grieving the loss of a loved one. She did note that not everyone experiences these stages in the same order, or even goes through all of them.
If you experience these five stages in sequential order defined by Kubler-Ross, they are as follows – 1. Denial; 2. Anger; 3. Bargaining; 4. Depression; 5. Acceptance.
Some physical effects of grieving can be experienced as well. They may include loss of appetite, and an inability to sleep or focus. This is considered normal.
There’s no set normal or best length of time to grieve. Some people may take 6 months to conclude the grieving process; others may take 18 months to do the same. Everyone’s experience is unique based on his or her personality and individual circumstances. It should be noted that even after you accept a loved one’s passing, certain events like birthdays and holidays may trigger emotional upsets.
A year or so after you’ve laid your loved one to rest in a Gilbert cemetery, you may find that your ability to cope with your loss will get better. This isn’t to say you’ll never feel sadness, but you may be managing your emotions and life overall with greater ease.
Regardless of your grieving process or feelings, don’t ever feel like you’re alone. Even if no one you know seems to understand what you’re going through, there are many grief support groups that are there to help. There is likely one in your area.
