In warm memory of

George ‘Pepe’ Grant

July 24, 1937 – January 13, 201

George is survived by his five children, Garnell, Buddy, Teresa, Alicia, and Renee, as well as 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The world lost an amazing voice and talent.

Though he made his home in Phoenix since 1984, his singing career started when he was a young teen in west Philadelphia, and flourished from there. His high tenor silky voice lead doo-wop and classic groups like George Grant and the Castelles, The Red Caps, The Orioles, and the world famous Ink Spots, taking him on tours all over the world. George was such a gentleman and gentle soul; he will be missed by many!

Services will be held at San Tan Mountain View Funeral Home on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at 4:00pm. San Tan Mountain View Funeral Home is located at 21809 S. Ellsworth Rd., Queen Creek, AZ 85142. Ph. 480-888-2682 www.santanmountainviewfuneralhome.com

Renee, Erik and I were saddened to hear about the loss of your dad, George. It was always such a pleasure to get to hear him sing too whenever he came to your performances. I know he was extremely proud of you. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Every time he saw Erik, he remembered the black and decker joke that Erik had once told him and he always asked him if he had been to the hardware store lately. Your dad had a great sense of humor, which is probably where you got yours. Please take some comfort in knowing your dad will be forever remembered for his amazing voice and great, loving spirit.

George Grant was a friend of mine. He was a kind, humble person, and I tried through many articles and conversations to convey to him how magical it was for so many of us to listen to his first recordings as lead of The Castells. George would thank me, but he always pointed out the flaws in the recordings, and what he called “the bad notes”. He was unable to hear the “magic” as it hit the public, which is understandable, but I never stopped trying to tell him how dearly his vocals were cherished by music lovers. He was the gold standard of that certain sound that so many groups would emulate over the years. He was a one-of-a-kind without doubt. No one who has a collection of 1950’s vocal groups has a real collection without the inclusion of George Grant. Never to be forgotten. Never to not be heard somewhere in this world at any given time. We all thank you, George.

I only knew George for years at Albertsons in Mesa! He was always such a gentleman, in a great mood, singing under his breath with a kind word for everyone! Our lives were brightened by knowing him….. He will be missed.
