Funeral questions, for obvious reasons, most often revolve around specific details pertaining to planning a funeral. Otherwise, funeral questions really don’t cross our minds. As you can imagine, though, every now and then someone will ask us about why we’re in the funeral business. We know. It seems like a rather unusual profession to go into. But, honestly, being in this business, has so many gratifying rewards. Just ask any of our funeral directors.
So, what does it take to be a funeral director? Probably the most common reason someone becomes a funeral director is because they have a natural empathy for those who grieving. They truly care about others who have lost a loved one. A funeral director also has a lot of patience. Understandably, people who are grieving may not know what they want or they may have an abundance of funeral questions. That’s why having patience and understanding is critical to helping mourners through the difficult and painful process of losing a loved one. Being calm and compassionate is just part of being a good funeral director.
Becoming a funeral director takes a great deal of commitment. The first step is acquiring a degree in mortuary science. This two- four-year program includes classes in the scientific and management side of the business. Once the degree is completed, there is a need to get licensed and to serve as an apprentice for direct experience.
Something that most people don’t realize about funeral directors is that their job does not begin at 9:00 am and end at 5:00 pm. Funeral directors need to be available at any time the need arises to be there for a family and to answer their funeral questions. But, a funeral director with a true heart for what they do, gives gladly of their time to be there for others. Again, it’s just their nature to care about people, especially those who are grieving.
