John passed away from complications of cancer on April 13, 2016. John was born to Daniel and Susan Mooney on February 9, 1963 in Topeka, KS.  He had just turned 53 in February. His brother, Mike and sister-in-law, Sherri were at his side, holding his hands, as he left our world. John had unfortunately gotten a MRSA staph infection two years ago when recovering from surgery to remove a cancerous tumor.  That infection came back last fall when he was undergoing chemotherapy for his cancer, and prevented him from completing the needed chemotherapy in time to get rid of his cancer. He is survived by his father, Daniel Mooney, brother, Michael Mooney and sister, Priscilla Gordon. He is now with his mother who passed away in 1999. John loved life and loved to share it with friends and family.  John was an intelligent, articulate man with a sharp wit and a smile that could light up a room.  John had lived in the Phoenix area for 10 years, but his heart was always with the city he grew up in:  Kansas City. He loved the Royals and Chiefs.  He loved the rich Kansas City music scene. John loved playing his guitar and listening to music.  He received his B.A. degree from UMKC.  During his time there he did several semesters of student teaching in the subject of history. Some of his happiest and proudest memories were in helping others understand concepts and the exchanging of ideas. He was a loyal friend and cared deeply for his friends and family.  John had a rich, multifaceted personality.  Friends and family have seen different sides of John; they all know how special they were to him.  All of us have funny stories we will treasure as a remembrance of him.

Family will greet friends for a visitation at 2:00pm, followed by a memorial service at 3:00pm, on Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at San Tan Mountain View Funeral Home, 21809 S. Ellsworth Rd., Queen Creek, AZ 85142.  Donations to the American Cancer Society are requested in lieu of flowers at Cancer.org.
