Albert Klein Smith, affectionately known as “Big Al,” passed away peacefully on August 16, 2025, at the age of 88 in Mesa, Arizona. Born on March 17, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, to William Smith and Pauline Agnes Klein, Al lived a vibrant life filled with creativity, and love for family and animals.
Al was an accomplished Technical Illustrator, whose skillful work brought precision and artistry to his profession. His passions extended beyond the canvas, as he found joy in painting, fishing, and aviation. A devoted pet lover, Al cherished the companionship of his many pets throughout his life, leaving a legacy of kindness toward animals.
Albert is survived by his sons, Daniel Smith (wife Lisa) and Andrew Smith (wife Jennifer); his ex-wife of 38 years, Nancy; his sister, Sandra Campbell (husband Gary); his brothers, Bill Smith (wife Kathryn), Rob Smith, and Doug Smith; his grandson, Nicholas Smith (wife Kseniia); and his great-grandson, Dean Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Pauline Smith.
No formal service is planned. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to your local animal shelter in Al’s memory, honoring his love for animals. Big Al’s legacy of creativity, warmth, and generosity will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
