Charles (Charlie) Jay Fox, age 82, of Gilbert, Arizona, passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2023

He was born August 8, 1941, in Kansas City, Kansas, to Harold and Bernice Fox. Charlie was active in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts growing up and earned the rank of Eagle Scout as a member of Troop 1 in Kansas City, Kansas, in 1956. Charlie graduated in 1959 from Wyandotte High School in KCK. He attended Kansas State University to earn a Bachelor of Education in 1964 and then a master’s degree from KSU Emporia in 1968.

He married Ruth Johnson on March 21, 1964, in Kansas City, Kansas. They were married for 59 ½ years.  Together they had one daughter, Stacy Fox.

Charlie spent his entire 35 years career in KCK Public Schools. He started as a Social Studies teacher at West Junior High from 1964 to 1973 and then became the Social Studies Supervisor/Specialist from 1973 until his retirement in 1999.

His interest in history and maps translated into a love of reading westerns and novels set during World War II. Charlie also was an early adopter of computers and continued to learn and explore as the technology evolved. Once computer navigation and online maps were available, he was totally in his element. Charlie was always willing to help whether it was a project with a neighbor, coaching a soccer team, or chauffeuring a grandson with a broken leg. Charlie enjoyed traveling with his family especially to Hawaii and Disneyland. Once Covid curtailed his travels, he and Ruth started doing jigsaw puzzles together and Charlie was very good at finding how a piece fit into the overall image.

Charlie is survived by his, wife Ruth (Johnson) Fox; daughter, Stacy Fox-Myers (Glayde Myers); grandsons, Grant and Heath Myers.  Brother-in-law, Boyce Hattaway and a niece and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold & Bernice Fox, and his sister, Donna Hattaway.

If you would like to honor Charlie’s memory, please consider a donation to Hospice of the Valley Arizona Donate (hov.org) or donate to a social studies teacher via DonorsChoose Arizona | DonorsChoose.
