Marilyn Murray Baker, beloved daughter of Richard Murray and Revella Kimball, was born on February 26th, 1953, in Roosevelt, Utah. She departed this world on March 21st, 2024.

Marilyn had five siblings: Gayla, Lana, Kathy, Rick, and Ray. Marilyn was passionate about learning, in high school she was an honor student, a cheerleader, a thespian and active in many school and community events. Her first job was in high school at Sathers Jewelry. After graduating from Union High School, she pursued her teaching degree at Utah State University, where she majored in English and minored in Theatre. She began her teaching career at Madison High School in 1974 and met, then married, her sweetheart Gary Baker on July 25, 1975. She and Gary were blessed with three boys: Trevor, Brett, and Michael, as well as seven grandchildren, Bethany, Jerelyn, Blair, Joella, Logan, Ellie and Laney.

For 31 years Marilyn taught school, dedicating most of her years to teaching junior high. Marilyn showed her family her commitment to teaching and her commitment to her students by grading papers at night, on vacations, decorating her school room and coming up with fun teaching plans for her students. Her family saw this consistent work ethic and passion for always putting your heart into what you do and learned that their mother loved to help others. These actions showed how she lived selflessly, teaching and helping her students develop a love for learning. She was an enthusiastic educator who found immense joy in teaching and was treasured by many of her students.

After her retirement in 2014 she found joy by volunteering to cuddle babies in the NICU at hospitals in Idaho Falls and Arizona. She took on a position as a student teaching advisor for BYU-I and ISU where she found a lot of enjoyment in providing mentorship to future teachers.

Marilyn was incredibly service minded throughout her life and tried very hard to follow the teachings of Christ and serve people as He would have. She was a great example to her boys and consistently showed them that love comes through service. She loved life and showed it by always speaking positively and choosing to look at life optimistically. Marilyn was a good friend to many.

She enjoyed camping and learned to ride a motorcycle just to be involved in her boys’ passions and be with family. Later in life, her love of the mountains became more easily enjoyed with UTVs.

Marilyn’s influence extends to her family, where she found immense joy and fulfillment. Despite the challenges her children may have put her through, the joy she derived from her grandkids made it all worthwhile. The love she felt for Gary, her sons and her grandchildren was immeasurable.

Her family is comforted knowing that she is surrounded by loved ones and was welcomed into heaven with open arms and much love.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Rick Murray; and her nieces, Cami Jo and Jacqueline.

Marilyn touched the lives of many. The family would love to hear your memories, if you’d like to leave the family a memory, please do so in the condolences section below.

Marilyn was a great example and a good friend. We worked together at Rigby Junior High for many years. She was my daughters favorite English teacher. She showed so much love and shared her joy of learning with her students. She was a joy to work with and always seemed to be smiling. May your family be blessed with peace during this difficult time.

She made it so easy to be around. I never felt like I was being forced to talk to people, she made it so easy to chat with and I always left with a smile. I’m definitely going to miss seeing her at family functions.

Marilyn was such a great neighbor! When we moved in, she brought us a loaf of bread to welcome us into the neighborhood. I remember one testimony, she quoted, “don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened”. I’m trying to smile because I knew you! I’m so glad we were able to go out to lunch just a few short months ago! You will be very missed!!

I taught with Marilyn for a short time at Rigby Junior High back in 2009-2011. She was such a a positive light to be around. She had such a great way with the students, too. I hope and pray you can feel peace at this trying time and remember the beautiful things about Marilyn because there were many beautiful things about her!!!!

I have never known life without my aunt Marilyn. She helped my mom when she got sick and stepped into the mother role to me and grandmother role to Kinley. There is going to be such a void without her. I miss her so much!

One of the kindest loving people that has lived on this earth. God bless you.

    Dear Gary and family,
You have been in our thoughts and prayers for weeks now. I have been trying to find the words to tell you how much we love and admire Marilyn, but words can’t really express. Brad worked with her at the Jr High for years and always considered her a friend and appreciated her dedication to her students. I also worked with her there, but also had the wonderful opportunity to serve with her in the Relief Society and that is where I really got to know and love her! She was a great example to me of kindness and love. She never said anything negative about anyone and would always find the good and see the bright side. She was talented and capable and I learned so much from her. What always stays with me though, is her happy personality and smile! I always felt better after visiting with her no matter where I saw her!
We love your family and hope you all feel peace and comfort throughout the coming weeks and months.
    Love,
    Brad and Lana Anderson
